Samsung I5700 (Galaxy SPICA) Android 2.1 Flashing Guide (Updated)

***** USE THIS GUIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK !  *******
***** DO NOT BLAME ME FOR BRICKED DEVICES ******

What you need :

The firmware : I570EDDJB2 in my case. (Unreleased Android 2.1 (Eclair) firmware from Samsung).
Multiloader application and Spica OPS (Odin_v4_03.exe + spica.ops) : Odin_v4_03.zip
*** Please use the new spica_jc3.ops file for the firmwares I5700XXJBA, I570EXXJC3 I570EXXJC5
Drivers for I5700 : drv5700.zip
Samsung USB Cable

Before you start :
Backup your data !
Remove the SIM lock if any.
Create a folder and extract all files listed above + the firmware (do not extract the tar file from within the firmware)
Ensure your phones battery is sufficiently charged (and your laptops battery too if you live in a country like ours lol ;-))
Shutdown any service/software which could be using the USB port, especially the Samsung PC suite. - Very Important

Flashing :

Edit : You should probably do a hard reset before you start by punching in the following code on the phone *2767*3855#

1. Shutdown your phone and remove the SDCARD and the SIM

2. Put the phone in "Download Mode" by pressing Volume Down + Camera + Power button.
Image Courtesy : samdroid.net
3. Connect the Phone to the PC using USB
4. Install drivers using the drv5700 files- A lot of guys are going wrong here.  Open your device manager and ensure the two Samsung devices are shown properly before you go ahead.(circled in red) - see image below :

4a. Disconnect phone from the USB. *** (Very Important), thanks to Srikanth Kapa (For all you guys having problems with "Setup Connection"
5. Open Odin Multi Downloader v4.03.exe and then reconnect the phone, you should see the a COM port number with a yellow background.
6. Select the files as shown in the image below :

Image Courtesy : samdroid.net
If you are using some other firmware and there is only one tar file select Option : One Package and load the file under One Package TAB.

Cross check the files and if you need to change anything click on "Reset Files" and select files again.

7. Once you are ready hit the START button. DO NOT DISCONNECT the phone until the firmware download completes.

8.Watch the "Message: window and wait till it shows <1> Close serial port and wait until rebooting.- This usually takes not more than 1-3 minutes.

9. At this point your flashing is complete and the device should be automatically rebooting, once the reboot is complete unplug the USB cable and flick open the Eclair green locking slider ;-)

Congrats !!! Welcome to the delicious ECLAIR club :-)

Issues :

Google Maps seems to be a bit temperamental (Upgraded to ver 4.0.0 from the new 2.1 Market). Phone has hung a couple of times but nothing really serious.

New Features :

Multiple Accounts Support
Exchange Support - No Calendar support or GAL lookup.
Camera now has Scene mode, White balance, Color effect
Search across the device including SMS/MMS
HTML5 Support in the browser.
Live Wallpapers
Refreshed UI

Hopefully Samsung will include pinch and zoom in the final release version :-)

Thanks to the guys at :

hey.. thanks..

i hav bought this fone few days ago and awaiting this 2.1.
but this is the first time i gonna try this kinda work since am new to this kinda fone. the old os version has to be taken in backup for any further usage if suppose this update not works? can u guide me how.. ;)

now bluetooth file transfer is working on 2.1 and voice recorder on calls?

GREAKY said...

you can always flash it to an older version.. by backup i meant backup of your data .. essentially your sms etc. If you have synced it with a gmail account you already have a backup of the phone nos. Happy Flashing.

Anonymous said...

did you void the warranty btw? ;) i'm sitting on the fence about flashing the 2.1 fw. any other issues like connecting to EDGE/GPRS, and buying from the android market (i presently don't see paid apps!)?

also, my baseband version is i5700DDIK2. is it ok to flash with the DDJB2 fw?

GREAKY said...

My guess is that warranty will be void if you manage to brick the device not by just flashing it. Haven't faced any issue with the GPRS/EDGE. It should be ok to flash from your baseband version. You can run a check @ samdroid.net just to be sure though. Let me know how it goes ;-) A delicious eclair awaits on this side of the fence lol.

what about paid apps? do they show up (or have i missed something out while setting up the phone)?\

thx!

GREAKY said...

nope ..paid application don't show on my phone atleast.. but that is something to do with the country I live in (India).. apparently paid applications are available in only 7 countries.

Hey,

I tried your guide... I use Winxp...
The first time i attempted, i got run-time error (a typical report [send][don't send] dialog box).
I unplugged the cable, removed the battery and restarted. I doesn't boot, stuck at the black screen having two icons, a pc and a handselt, in a middle, an exclamation mark. what the hell is this??? m retrying but the odin stuck "<1> setup connection..." whats this man???? is ma phone bricked???????????

Anonymous said...

ITS ALREADY 10 MINS AT "<1> setup connection..." HOW MORE LONG SHOULD IT TAKE?????

Anonymous said...

could u not fuckin explain how to use the provided drivers???? don't put incomplete info if u know s.h.i.t. about things?!!!!! people would definitely brick their phone reading such useless info!!!!! beware people!!!!!!

GREAKY said...

You obviously can't understand english.. read the first line of the post.. its bold and in red font. You should not have used the guide if you did not know what you
were doing. If your xp threw a wobbly you can't blame me.

Anonymous said...

I get the feeling that anyone who doesn't understand how windows drivers work, without help, really shouldn't be trying to flash a phone(!)

I reckon the instructions above aren't bad. Enough info that if I wanted to have a go I could. But I won't. I just spent a fair bit of money on a new phone and recognise that there's a reasonable chance I could brick it.

People do stupid things sometimes, don't they.

pamungkas said...

Dude, u forgot to set the "debug only" checkbox on the odin tool to allow erase PDA otherwise it will render the device with 0.00mb internal storage memory. HTH oh and theres also 64bit drivers as well (google for SamsungUSBDriver_4_40_7_0_v1_6.zip for you too lazy to reinstall 32bit windows like me:))

Rishikesh said...

Any idea how to backup the original firmware?

How much is the application memory and how is the ram utilization?

GREAKY said...

About backing up the original firmware I would suggest asking in the samdroid.net forums. I had an earlier firmware tar files and the phone was new so I personally did not bother about backing up the existing firmware.

Not sure how to check the application memory but I use advanced task manager to free up memory used by every couple of hours. Otherwise The phone tends to get sluggish at times.

GREAKY said...

Some anonymous person is trying to tell me I have copied this guide from Samdroid.net ..well for starts I have credited them ! and yes I flashed my phone using the various guides available on that very forum.

The only trouble is that most guys there are Russaian (no offense) moreever there are 2-3 different versions which is kinda confusing.

So I decided to post/share what worked for me to ease up some confusion for fellow Android users.

Never meant this to THE GUIDE :-) Just happy to share my experience.

Rishikesh said...

@Sameer : by application memory i meant the internal storage space available. With the default firmware DDIK2 the internal storage space available is 183 mb.

How much is it with this new firmware? Also any changes in the media player?

GREAKY said...

@Rishi - currently it shows 101 MB free but that is after all the additional applications installed. Media player sure looks differnt although by how much I am not sure.. I never use my phone for music :-)

Rishikesh said...

i tried to flash to the new firmware but the process is stuck at

<1> setup connection

any idea whats going wrong?

GREAKY said...

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-lite/48087-samsung-i5700-galaxy-spica-android-2-1-flashing-guide-english.html

Looks like you have not disabled NPC or the Drivers are not installed properly.

GREAKY said...

I would suggest you stop at this point.. post these questions in a forum and after you are sure try again.

Rishikesh said...

I dont have NPC installed

I reinstalled the drivers and 2 things were installed

Samsung mobile modem and composite device

Tried Odin and again it seems to be stuck at setup connection

I just saw the new pics you have put up...i get the modem and composite device but there is no ADB interface...how to install that?

Anonymous said...

Hi, I am having problems with the drivers. I use windows 7 64bit os. Can you instruct me on how to do this?

GREAKY said...

There seems to be a problem when you try this with 64bit drivers, I guess you rather wait for the official release, won't be nice bricking your phone in the process.

BTW if the process doesn't go beyond you should probably remove the battery and start your phone again, that seems to save the phone from bricking.

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-lite/48087-samsung-i5700-galaxy-spica-android-2-1-flashing-guide-english.html#post381596

GREAKY said...

@ Rishikesh - ADB interface is something thats probably come up since I rooted this device using ADB. Not sure though, noticed it after you posted that comment.

Unknown said...

I am stuck too :-(
The ODIN detects the phone but doesnt go ahead of step 1 :-(

GREAKY said...

Thats unlucky.. suggest you wait for the official one. Don't want a bricked device.. do we ?

Sanjay Pednekar said...

Hi Sameer, Thanks for the guide. I have successfully upgraded my spica to 2.1 and loving it. Multiple gmail accounts was something i wanted desperately and I now have it :) . One thing, in Odin if I select the CSC file I was getting the cache.rfs error. I then flashed only the boot, phone and PDA after which the upgrade was successful. Thanks once again. Great work.
Sanjay

GREAKY said...

Quote so u would say i5700 is a better buy than i7500 if i want to install android 2.1?? and this is the only phone tht offers android and 3g for this price right..

@raghu - yes this is cheapest 3g phone in india and a bloody good one.. it has a 800 MHz CPU vs a 528 MHz cpu on the i7500, also the i7500 wont get the 2.1 upgrade.

robertja said...

Just tryed and got stuck at " <1> setup connection " in Odin, and when I restarted the phone afterwords it was not comming up again, so I had to flash it with the i5700XEIJ4 firmware to get it working.

Strange that its working with i5700XEIJ4 but not with I570EDDJB2...

@finalmoksha: how did you get past it?

CHOBiE said...

Is app2sd included in this? Thanks =]

Alb said...

i'm not getting "samsung usb modem" under modems in device manager when copnnecting via usb.

Manu Parameswaran said...

Thanks for the note Sameer. A good guide to start with.

Have you tested all features mentioned here?: http://smarterware.org/4308/android-2-1s-best-features-in-screenshots

pamungkas said... "u forgot to set the "debug only" checkbox on the odin tool to allow erase PDA otherwise it will render the device with 0.00mb internal storage memory."

So, should we have to tick Debug Only before starting the execution?

How about this deal from ebay? (13.5k including 2GB card & shipping):
http://cgi.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290401318125&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:IN:1123

You did mention above as 12.5k for yours. Was that inclusive of tax and others?

Anonymous said...

What if I used a 32bit pc? Ihave xp and 7.

onu said...

What is the price of this phone in Mumbai? Where is it available?

GREAKY said...

@ lee xp should be safer..
@ alb try the forums at samdroid.net/androidforums.com
@ chobie nope no apps2sd on this rom
@ ali - i got it for 12500 in pune..no idea about mumbai.
@ manu - I did not tick that debug thingy but if you do get the 0.0B problem then you probably have to select that and reflash again.. crosscheck in the forums though.
13.5 seems a little high.. look around and you might find it cheaper.. I think no harm paying around 13k if you can't find it for 12.5

Lastly yes ..I have checked all those features listed ..the only thing missing is a 3D galary..

@ Giuliano - All firmwares have mulltiple languages.. you could switch the language once the upgrade is done. I just checked and it has Italiano (Italia) as a language.

Hey does adobe flash work with this rom? Can I install adpbe flash n view flash content in the browser

GREAKY said...

@ Dilip : nope flash is not supported. Android is yet to get it officially. It might be soon though.

I managed to flash my phone successfully(uk t-mobile user) however my 3g connection has gone and cant connect to internet unless i use the wifi.

any suggestions on how to fix this

GREAKY said...

@ Richard - That seems to be a one of the bug(s), What you can do is to add the settings manually. It worked for me that way.

Allan M. Kristensen said...

If have the same problem as Richard, I can add the apn settings manually, but when I save it doesn't save! I can't figure out why, any help here? I'm danish, have a danish provider, it worked perfekt for 1.5 firmware, but not now....

CHOBiE said...

Did you notice any performance improvement on the 2.1 upgrade vs the stock firmware?

GREAKY said...

@ Allan - for me it gets fixed if I restart the phone.

@ Chobie - The performance is good with 2.1 although it does tend to get a bit sluggish at times. I used the 1.5 only for about a day ;-) so can't really say.

Anonymous said...

You did not teach us how to do the drivers?

Allan M. Kristensen said...

@ Sameer - Thanks, that worked for me, the APN settings are a little buggy, but it works now. I'm very happy :-). Only thing missing now is Danish dictionary and keyboard, but i guess I'll have to wait for the official upgrade for this.

GREAKY said...

@ Lee - when you connect the phone it should prompt you to install the drivers at that point just point it to the drivers folder.

@ Allan I have installed an application called APN Backup and Restore (FREE) just in case the APN settings vanish again. You can try it too.

Anonymous said...

What are the causes of getting stuck at setup connection 1?
if its the drivers, could you be more specific?

hi sameer...
my firmware is I5700DXJA1, can i upgrade to 2.1 ?

Unknown said...

Hi Sameer! Great Piece of work. Does the phone now support voice recognition? I mean creating SMS using voice. I was looking forward to this in 2.1. Also in case we do this upgrade as suggested by you will it be possible to do the final upgrade once samsung releases the official version?
Thanks
Shaji

GREAKY said...

@ Lee I am not really sure, maybe they are not getting installed properly, you could try with another clean installation of XP.

@ mboisker - I see no problem with that.

@ shaji - yes it does support voice recognition,although i am not sure how useful it is. I would think the official upgrade can be applied on this firmware.

I bought this phone, a day before you posted this article. I am so happy that i bought the right one ... :-P...
a few questions... ive been trying to figure out how to do the following.

1. Restore it to the Factory Firmware if i don't like the new one.

2. Will i be able to get the official one later after i put this firmware on it now ?

3. I tired using the Samsung PC Studio Disk that came with it ... and it sucks
a. It dosnt detect the phone so i had to download a new version with came with corby
b. It has no compatibility with android what so ever. No Data Backup, No Emergency Restore... Even No way to register your phone ? All it does is allow u to access Ur sd card...
Did u go through the same shit ? or is it just me ?

Anonymous said...

I have done it, successfully. Its slow, asks me to set it up every time i start it, and reverts settings everytime i restart it. its horrible, many bad things about it. is there any way i can revert it to the default firmware? i am singaporean. does anyone have the files for that?

GREAKY said...

@Lee. U can download the 1.5 fiwate frm http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungandroidi5700.htm

Sameer, i have the SPICA Baseband Version i5700DXIL1 Android version 1.5 purchased in Singapore and i am using it in India. The New PC suite 1.3.0 came with the mobile phone was a crap, so i have downloaded New PC suite 1.4.0 from SAMSUNG UK site and it installs the drivers (Android Modem and USB Composite device) but still the phone is not getting detected. I could not even take backup of Contacts. Could you please suggest some Apps for contact backups so that i can proceed on to next step of upgrading the firmware to 2.1? Also any idea when the Andriod 2.1 will be officially anounced by SAMSUNG?

flashing with csc (cache.rfs in the tar file) didn't work, but removing it did help (also installed nps from samsung), anyhow, thanks for the guide

Anonymous said...

which one? btw, is there something wrong with what i did? causing the glitches and slowness?

Anonymous said...

Ok. I did it, but same problem as before. Its the 1.5 firmware, but it is as if it factory resets itself everytime i restart it. it also has the no space error everytime i try to install an app. What has happened? i know you warned us, but is there a way to save my phone?

jiahong said...

IT WORKS!!!

Following the instruction, I also experience the problem of stucking at " <1> setup connection "

After trying and trying I almost gave up. Then it comes across my mind that the problem is the connectivity issue, so work on it...

So I try a little different from what the guide said as follows:

Unplug the phone after installing the drivers (until seeing the circled devices on the device manager)
Now open the Odin app...
And plug in the phone and follows exactly as the guide.
The device should start downloading from computer

@ Lee - start the flash once again and this time check the DEBUG only check box.... there is and answer to this somewhere on the samdroid.net forum.. please refer to that and you should be ok.

@ Roghan - uncheck the CSC file and flash again.. that should solve it.

Thanks alot, i really apreciate your help.

GREAKY said...

@ Andrew - Ideally you should not have any kind of lock on the phone or the SIM. I am not sure about the T mobile lock though.. It should be ok but you can try to find out more about it.

@ Robert - Please see my other post, it has details about how to root and install livewallpapers.. Although on my phone the livewallpaper is only active when the phone is locked. Apparently you need a modified launcher for using with the Livewallpapers.. The default Panteon does not work with Livewallpapers.

@ Abhishek - Samdroid.net has a sticky related to backing up your current firmware.

Unknown said...

One more thing, is there away we can get the offical firmware when samsung releases it? The original one for my country?

Unknown said...

I just found out market place cannot download apps. Have plenty of space left after reflashing. I suspect it is because I got a foreign firmware. Where can I get a singaporean 1.5?

GREAKY said...

@ Nicholas - check the free space left on your phone memory .not the SD Card.. there is no reason why you should not be able to download apps. If it shows 0 bytes reflash using the DEBUG only checkbox.

I'm in Singapore and using this firmware. I have the "Download Unsucessful" bug in market... Really sad now. Can't do much...

GREAKY said...

@ Nicholas - yes you can get the official fw after it releases... not sure where u can get the singaporean 1.5 though.. as far I know the country does not matter when it comes to firmwares.

@ Lee - that seems to be a problem with the GPRS/3g more than anything else.. you should try again or maybe try to download something else when this happens to ascertain what is the cause.

From the Netherlands:
Use the discription as archived BUT:
Only use the PDA file and the Spica.ops file. After 1,5 min. the Galaxy will reboot and you can start configurate the Spica

Good job with everything. Are you happy with the performance of your 5700 with the 2.1 firmware now you've had it for a while?

cheers

GREAKY said...

@ derek - the performance is good...although I can't really say how it is compared to the 1.5.. I used the 1.5 for not more than a day.

I am loving all the new features though..

@ Dennis - you should check the settings with your provider.. I see no reason why it should not connect if the APN settings are present.

The comment Jan left. Does this help so I can get further than step 1 in flashing do you think ?

GREAKY said...

@ galaxy - If you are having problem with the cache.frs error you can leave out the CSC file and you should be fine.

Unknown said...

Hej Sameer, i did install without de CSC file, and all seems to work fine, and connects to my dutch vodafone without problems, it all worked before on the 1.5 version, is it possible to change the radio rom?

I dont see a 3G or G sign in the top bar at all.. it did show that really well before...

Maybe some idea?

Greetz Dennis and keep up the good work.

@ Dennis - you should check the settings with your provider.. I see no reason why it should not connect if the APN settings are present.

GREAKY said...

@ dennis - Not too sure about this.. maybe you can try posting this question in the samdroid.net or androidforme.com forums.

Thanks for the quick respons... I did have the error at first with the CSC so tried without. But after 12 mins of "<1> setup connection..." I disconnected.... Jan said to only use the pda file and leave out the Boot and CSC.... Is that the way to go ? I am running XP with the drivers you linked to in the guide..

Cheers from Denmark

GREAKY said...

@ Galaxy - well you can try that. Just don't brick your phone.

4733galaxy said...

Sameer.

Hehe well i will try not to. But is there a risk of doing that by just flashing PDA file?

GREAKY said...

@ galaxy - there is always a risk of bricking when you are flashing the phone ;-)

4733galaxy said...

Sure.. I know hehe. but thanks for a great guide.. know I just dont know if I dare trying to flash again LOL

Karan Kadam said...

Thanks for the guide. I had read about it on Samdroid but was waiting for someone to try it out. Anyways I installed Eclair and used it for a week. Great feature wise but it is very sluggish compared to Cupcake. That and a couple of minor bugs made me switch back to Cupcake. Cupcake is like a breath of fresh air after Eclair ( which is good but is miles away from a polished version ) Anyways, thanks again!

Unknown said...

I only installed the PDA file and the 2.1 Firmware is perfect. Even the speeds performance is great.
Remember to set the right provider settings for your GPRS/UMTS/3G otherwise it will not work.
And just like said before, there is always a risk to flash your phone. In my case it worked great.
Some applications are not working properly cause the new firmware restrictions due some applications.

Hi thanks for your comprehensive guide I have managed to flash my phone and have been using my phone in the uk. The only thing is its stuck on silent for incoming calls there is no option to select anything other than silent. Obviously I'm a bit of a novice, I thought that 2.1 would be more like the nexu one and have a 3d feel to it.

Anyway keep up the good work and pointers regarding the silent issues would be welcomed.

Thanks

Please read my earlier comments.. you need to reflash using the DEBUG option. That will fix it.

Thanks sameer for this awesome guide. At first i got stuck on "<1> setup connection...",
then I removed the csc file and puff! Its Done :D
so far so good. Got no problems yet :)

I wanna share something about firmware codes.
Only European and Asia Firmwares.

XA = Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, UK
XB = Denmark, Norway, Sweden
XC = Portugal, Spain
XD = Croatia, Czech, Hungary, Slovakia
XE = Bulgaria, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine
XF = Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania
XP = Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Polski, Portuguese, Turkish
XW = UK, Italy, Germany, France, Australia, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland
XX = Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom

DD = India
DX = Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam
ZC = China, Hong Kong
ZH = Hong Kong

Note: every firmware has English language.

Year/Month. Code.
A = 2001 - January
B = 2002 - February
C = 2003 - March
D = 2004 - April
E = 2005 - May
F = 2006 - June
G = 2007 - July
H = 2008 - August
I = 2009 - September
J = 2010 - October
K = 2011 - Novermber
L = 2012 - December

Explain:
My Spica I5700 version is I5700DXJA1
DX = Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam
J = 2010
A = January
1 = Version

then in "http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungandroidi5700.htm" there is

I5700DXJB3 which means
DX = Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam
J = 2010
B = February

This firmware is newer for my "DX" since i'm in indonesia :)

Hope this find useful guys :)

@FOR ALL THOSE WORRYING WITH BRICKED PHONES
1. Disconnect the cable from the phone and pc.
2. Uninstall all samsung phone drivers by going to devmgmt.msc
3. Install the drivers that came with the phones CD.
4. Upon installation stop the NPS(Samsung PC studio application).
5. Open the file Odin_v4_03\spica.ops
6. Go to the "6," and type in "cache" no space no changes in the file except this.
7. Remove your phone battery for about a min.
8. Put it in download mode using the procedure given above. Volume down+camera+power.
9. Now connect the phone to the PC.
10. Now follow the instructions provided by SAMEER starting from the "5th" step follow exactly the same procedure everything will work fine .
11. Do not disconnect the phone until you see PASS in Blue background in the square box above the yellow COM port connection indication box on Odin v4_03

read the steps together
5. Open the file Odin_v4_03\spica.ops
6. Go to the "6," and type in "cache" no space no changes in the file except this.

OPEN Odin_v4_03\spica.ops IN NOTEPAD IN THAT FILE YOU WILL FIND SOME 9 OPTIONS I THINK "6," IS EMPTY RIGHT ?

Hi sameer

I flashed to DXJB3 coz i live in Singapore. Can i understand the significance of an asian firmware versus say DDJB2 or XXJB4 ? Can I then try to install a DDJB2 to my phone then ?

Also, since installed to DXJB3, my USB is not able to mount to my XP or Windows 7. Would u know how I can solve this ? I need to copy my apps saved on my desktop to the phone and I dont have wi-fi at home

Aneez said...

Hi Sameer

I installed DXJB3 coz I live in Singapore. But can I understand what's the real difference between a DDJB2 or XXJB4 ? Can I install it on my phone as well. if so, what's the impact.

Also, my SD is not able to mount after I installed ..DXJB3. Did you face similar issues and how did you overcome it ?

GREAKY said...

@ aneez - I have read that there is not much difference between the various firmwares available.. although some localisation could be added to a region specific firmware.

As for the mount problem ..what is the error you get ? you could try posting it in one of the forums.

Hi Sameer,

2.1 is kinda slow compared to 1.5.. I've been reading around. Seems like the Light Weight Mod is capable of making it slightly faster. Am I wrong or? If so, can't seem to get hold of a guide anywhere..

GREAKY said...

@ manu - not sure what could be wrong there.. maybe its just the volume ?

@ Vikid - can u try some other SDCARD ? going back to 1.5 is possible.. just reflash one of the 1.5 firmware.

@ bryan - well if you see those two devices in the device manager then you have the drivers installed already (if you have samsung PC suite installed ..the drivers would be there already)

@yilong - 2.1 is a bit sluggish but then this still an unreleased version... Suggest you use something like the advanced task manager to end applications which are not required periodically. Another thing you should do is to replace the default Launcher - Panteon with something like Pandahome..

@ Chandu - Bluetooth works like a charm. You could play around with the 1.5 for a day or two and then decide to take the plunge. I did the same and I don't regret it one bit. Although please be aware of the risks involved.

GREAKY said...

@ apel - download and install the APPManager from the market.

@ Bhavnit - Yes.

@ Johnson - After connecting the phone the computer should prompt you to install drivers.. at that point browse and point it to the drivers folder (extract it first). Although Johnson.. no offence but if you are not aware/comfortable with the drivers installation I recommend you wait for the official version to come out. A bricked phone is very sad.

Hi Sameer, I tried to flash my system yesterday. This is what happened:
- I had already installed NPS drivers that came with my phone. When I enable debugging on the phone and connect it, it shows Samsung Android USB Modem and Samsung Android USB Composite device
- I did hard reset, turned off, removed the SIM and mem card and turned it on with the buttons pressed and it went to download mode
- However now when I connected the cable, it showed up as Samsung Modem #2 and Samsung Composite Device in device manager. It wasn't showing the earlier Samsung Android device and it didn't ask for installing any drivers either
- After proceeding further using odin, it detected COM4 as you mentioned and I pointed to the right files and enabled debug mode. 10 min. and nothing happened.It didn't go beyond Setup <1> stage
- Then I disconnected and turned on the device. Thankfully everything was safe :-)

What can I do further to get it working. Why isn't it detecting as android device when connected in download mode? Should I try it again or do you see any brick in creation here?

Your advice would be very helpful

GREAKY said...

@ Jab - All I can think is that you need to try the drivers that I have posted. Everything else seems to be alright. Uninstall the NPS and then try this once again. I have read that if you remove the battery if the setup gets struck then you won't brick the device.. although I can't be sure. Goodluck.

GREAKY said...

@ Patrick - did you manage to save the phone ?

JAB said...

Succesfully flashed to 2.1! The new version seems good...Here's my observation after looking at it for 5 minutes:
- There is no rington as mannu said..the only option available is silent mode..Also there's no audible feedback when typing, that's also silent
- The home screen is slightly sluggish..but the apps as such works fine
Any suggestion for these issues?

Apart from that everything else looks great but not very polished as one gentleman commented

Thanks again for your tutorial!

Hi Sameer,

Thanks a lot man, this upgrade worked n i'm enjoying the 2.1 version. however the GPRS seems not to be connecting. I installed the firmware with the CSC file as previously it gave me a error. Later it was done & working fantastic.

Also i faced the same problem whr Odin used to stop at "Setup Connection" however i found out a driver which helped me overcome this.

when u connect the USB cable after it gets into the download mode u can download the "
ADB Drivers for Win XP/Vista/7" drivers from the below link & run setup.exe

http://forum.samdroid.net/threads/18-Flash-Your-Samsung-I5700-%28firmwares-amp-tools%29-ENG

after installing it successfully u can use the Odin to upgrade the firmware.

I confirmed with Service Provider n got the settings, now i can also enjoy GPRS.

Jahapanha tussi great ho.....

JAB said...

My GPS doesn't seem to be working in 2.1..I am not getting position update in google maps or any other 3rd party GPS software...Has anyone faced this issue?

Manu Parameswaran said...

@JAB: I managed to overcome the ringer issue by following steps:

1) Open MyFiles application
2) Create 3 folders media\audio\ringtones
3) Copy paste your ring tones in the ringtones folder
4) Go to settings and you'll have the ring tones listed

Hope this helps.

Hello Sameer,

keep up the good work.
Last week I was in Dubai for a few days and picked up a Spica. Now I am back home.
After buying the unit I found there was no Market app installed and am thinking about flashing the phone.

Will the 2.1 image work on this phone?

@ Prakhar - u should check the APN settings with your service provider.

@ wahyu - the only way to get the phone in the download mode is by pressing the Volume_Down + Camera + Power button.
